UDAM newsletter #2

You’ll read below some ongoing activities of the UDAM working group. Please keep in mind that UDAM is above all an opportunity for all of us to gather, work together and increase the visibility of asset management within the urban drainage community. We are more than open to new ideas, propositions and initiatives related to urban drainage asset management, so don’t wait to contact us!

Some feedback from NOVATECH, LESAM and WATERMATEX

UDAM was represented at these different conferences.

During Novatech 2019, UDAM chaired the session on asset management (this was the first time that the topic was introduced). During this session, the presenters highlighted the rapid expansion of the stormwater assets (particularly green infrastructures), the necessity to move from reactive maintenance to smarter approaches, and some promising leads to predict soil contamination or hydraulic clogging. The session synthesis and all the proceedings of the conference are available here: http://www.novatech.graie.org/a_progr_sessions.php.

During LESAM 2019, UDAM participate to the conference and chaired a session. Connexion have also been established between UDAM and the SAM Specialist Group. UDAM wants to be more involved in the next LESAM conference: see the call for ideas below.

During WATERMATEX 2019 the group was represented in the discussions about uncertainties in the different models applied over the whole range of urban drainage and treatment.

The UDAM committee is looking for a young researcher to share decisions and actions

Following a very good suggestion during the last EURO-SAM workshop, the UDAM committee would like to welcome a young researcher willing to be involved in the decision and the actions. Anyone young and interested in working with / for our research community (we would suggest below 35 years old even if we are already much older but feeling still very young!) can contact us!

COST action, do you want to join?

Franz is coordinating a proposal to build a collaborative network on sewer asset management and its relationship with other urban infrastructure. If you want to be part of this COST(https://www.cost.eu/) action, please contact Franz as soon as possible.

ICUD conference 2020 in Melbourne, Australia: asset management is on fire!

Be prepared to submit an abstract to the next International Conference on Urban Drainage. This is the first time that the topic “Urban drainage asset management” is proposed. UDAM will chair a session and we are waiting for your contribution. It will be a unique opportunity to share and learn on sewer asset management, nature-based solution asset management, etc. The session aims at building new links and interactions between different research communities. In January, UDAM will send update information, but don’t forget to book the 6-11 September 2020! The next ICUD conference website is here: www.icud2020.org.

7th EURO-SAM workshop in June 2020 in Lulea, Sweden

Stay tuned, we will launch a first call in the beginning of next year. As always, the EURO-SAM (European research workshop on Sewer Asset Management) is free of charge and open to anyone but with a limited number of participants. This year, the EURO-SAM workshop will be organized by the University of Technology of Lulea in Sweden. Check our website for update: https://udam.home.blog/.

LESAM Bordeaux: call for ideas

The next LESAM Conference will be held in 2021 in Bordeaux, France. UDAM wants to actively support the conference. If you have ideas for a dedicated UDAM session, do not hesitate to email us. The session can be for example a workshop on a specific topic, a panel discussion mixing expert on different urban drainage infrastructure… We are open to any idea!

Good news on our review paper on sewer asset management

The paper has been submitted in May 2019 and we have now received favourable feedback from Urban Water Journal. Only minor revisions are necessary and so we hope for publication soon.

UDAM @ the World Water Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark

UDAM will be present at the next Water Congress the 18-23 October 2020. Feel free to tell us if you have ideas on how to gather our urban drainage community at this event. For now, UDAM has submitted two abstracts.

Following the submitted review paper on sewer asset management, Franz has coordinated the submission of an abstract on the subject. “It came from the sewers – what about asset management?” abstract, gathering many members of UDAM.

Jeroen has proposed and coordinated the submission of another abstract entitled “Urban drainage asset management – also for blue-green infrastructures!”. This is the start of on main objective of the UDAM working group: to gather the sewer asset management communities and the Stormwater Control Measure community in order to tackle the growing problem of aging of Stormwater Control Measure. Stay tuned and do not hesitate to contact us if you want to be part of the adventure.

Feel free to join our working group!

Since the start of the group (end of 2018), the UDAM working group has already 30 members all over the world! Feel free to disseminate the group’s website (https://udam.home.blog/): it gathers information on the working group, presents the current activities as well as the members list.
